Mobile Internet in Montenegro 2026 – SIM Card, eSIM & Current Prices
⚠ Important: Montenegro is not in the EU — EU roaming does not apply here. Using your German (or other EU) SIM card, you’ll often pay several euros per MB. Be sure to get a local SIM or eSIM before you travel.
Providers: Crnogorski Telekom, m:tel, ONE (formerly Telenor)
Prices from: €15 for 15 days / 500 GB
eSIM: Yes — all three providers, buy directly online
Network standard: 5G available from all providers
Registration: Passport or ID card required
Our recommendation: m:tel Tourist Prepaid, or an eSIM bought directly online
Montenegro is one of the most generous countries in Europe when it comes to tourist data plans — 500 GB for 15 euros is a deal you simply won’t find in Germany. If you know that and arrive prepared, you won’t have any problems. If you don’t know it, you’ll pay a fortune roaming on your home SIM.
I was there myself in 2026 and ordered the eSIM directly online — it worked brilliantly, and I already had data at Tivat Airport without needing to buy a physical SIM card. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Three Mobile Providers in Montenegro
m:tel Montenegro – Tourist Prepaid
m:tel is a subsidiary of Telekom Srbija and has particularly strong network coverage in rural regions — ideal if you’re also travelling away from the coast. The Tourist Prepaid offer is especially attractive for longer stays.
- €15 / 15 days — 500 GB data + 8 GB WB6 roaming (Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo)
- €20 / 30 days — 1 TB data + Move TV
- €30 / 45 days — Unlimited internet + Move TV
Topping up (min. €5) extends the package and unlocks an extra 500 GB.
My experience in 2026: I ordered the eSIM directly via mtel.me/for-tourists — identity verification with ID and a selfie takes about 2–3 minutes. After that, the eSIM was active immediately. Coverage in Budva, Kotor, and along the road to Ulcinj was flawless throughout.
Crnogorski Telekom – Best Network Coverage
Crnogorski Telekom (T-Mobile Montenegro) has the widest network coverage in the whole country — particularly good in mountain regions such as Durmitor. Prices are similar to m:tel, and eSIM is also available directly online. Tourist packages from about €10–15 for 15–30 days · eSIM available online · 5G network · widest overall coverage in the country.
ONE Montenegro (Formerly Telenor)
ONE focuses on innovation and flexible plans. Also runs a 5G network, with prices similar to its competitors. A good choice if you already know ONE from other countries. Tourist packages from about €15 for 15 days / 500 GB · eSIM available · 5G network.
eSIM or Physical SIM Card?
✓ eSIM – our recommendation
- Buy online before you travel
- Active immediately at the airport
- No need to visit a shop
- Can be used alongside a second SIM
- Can’t be lost
- Identity check done online (2–3 min.)
Physical SIM card, on location
- Available in shops, kiosks & airports
- From about €10–15
- Bring your passport / ID card
- Shops at Tivat and Podgorica airports
- Good if your phone isn’t eSIM-capable
Important for eSIM: Your phone must be eSIM-capable (iPhone XS or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer, most modern Android devices). The device also needs to be SIM-unlocked — this isn’t automatically the case with some mobile contracts.
Where to Buy — Before You Travel or On Location?
Online before your trip (recommended)
Directly on m:tel’s website: mtel.me/for-tourists — both a physical SIM (shipped) and an eSIM are available there. Identity verification only takes a few minutes. That way, you’re already online as you land in Tivat.
At the airport
Both Tivat and Podgorica airports have shops from the mobile providers. Bring your passport — registration on-site takes about 5–10 minutes. The airport shops often carry the same tourist packages as online.
In town
In Budva, Kotor, Herceg Novi and all the larger towns, you’ll find numerous provider shops as well as kiosks selling SIM cards. Supermarkets and petrol stations often stock prepaid cards too.
APN Settings & Practical Tips
- m:tel APN: mtelinternet (usually set automatically)
- Check your balance: dial *105#
- Top up data: mtel.me/elektronska-dopuna or *105#
- WB6 roaming: works automatically in Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo
- App: Moj m:tel app for iOS and Android
- Tip: After inserting the SIM or activating the eSIM, restart your phone once — the APN settings are usually applied automatically. If not, enter the APN „mtelinternet” manually.
Network Coverage in Montenegro
Along the coast — Budva, Kotor, Herceg Novi, Ulcinj — network coverage from all three providers is excellent. In the mountains and in Durmitor National Park the signal can get weaker, but it’s still present in most touristy areas.
- Coast (Budva, Kotor, Tivat): All providers — very good 4G/5G network
- Mountains / Durmitor: Telekom has the best coverage, m:tel is good in rural areas
- Podgorica / Nikšić: All providers — excellent
- Border regions (Albania, Serbia): WB6 roaming kicks in automatically
